Don’t you even ask what you’re supporting?
This blog challenges the blind support of shelters that clearly prioritize fundraising and donations over adoption. It urges readers to ask the hard questions—like why so many animals are still stuck in cages after years—and demands action, not just feel good donations. It’s time to ask more about the ‘system’ and start demanding real outcomes for more animals.

Don’t You Even Ask What You’re Supporting?
It’s time to ask the tough questions. Too often, we support causes that seem noble, but when you take a closer look, the truth is hiding behind the façade. If you’ve been donating to shelters or animal facilities, it’s time to really think about where your money is going and what it’s actually supporting.
You should be asking:
• Who’s being adopted?
• Who’s been there the longest?
• Who’s being walked?
• Who’s actually promoting the animals?
If you can’t find these answers, maybe you’re not supporting rescue at all. Maybe, instead, you’re supporting the silence that keeps these animals hidden, neglected, and stuck in a system that doesn’t prioritize their well-being.
Now ask yourself:
• Why are the animals never the focus?
• Why are the same animals still behind the same bars, year after year?
• Why is help being turned away when it’s offered?
• Why are fundraisers getting more visibility than the actual animals?
• Why do donations seem more important than tangible outcomes?
• Why do you continue to trust a system that refuses to answer these questions?
• And why are there more pictures of the bloody volunteers and management than of the animals?
• Why are volunteers leaving?
• Why don’t more come? To us, it’s so obvious.
Contrary to their spin on it, we don’t want shelters to close.
What we want is for them to do more of what they’re supposed to do, which is to offer shelter with a chance of rehoming. How on earth can so many animals spend years there? We get asked for animals on an almost daily basis whenever we make posts. And the kicker? We don’t even have a shelter (as some love to remind us), but we get as many rehomings as many shelters—and in most cases, more. How can that even be?
The truth is hard to swallow, but it’s necessary. If no one’s being adopted, if no one’s being walked, and if no one’s being promoted for a future beyond the cage, then what exactly are you funding with your donations?
You’re not funding change. You’re funding the system that keeps these animals in limbo. It’s time to shift the focus to the animals.
This isn’t about supporting people. It’s about supporting the animals. Each and every one of them. Not just the few who get the spotlight or the ones that the shelter deems “adoptable.” Every life in every shelter matters. These animals deserve a future, and they deserve to be seen, heard, and given a chance to live beyond the cages they’ve been locked in.
Stop blindly supporting the system that keeps animals in cages, with no future ahead. Stop letting the noise of fundraisers drown out the real issue—these animals need homes, not more walls.
The bottom line:
If you’re going to support, support the animals. Be their voice. Demand the visibility they deserve. Ask the hard questions, and hold the system accountable for what it’s actually doing—or not doing.
